I have just received the new MacBook Pro Retina and I am really amazed by the high-resolution screen. Unfortunately, Picasa does not support the Retina display and photos do not look as stunning as on iPhoto. However, iPhoto I cannot cope with. I have really tried but having known Picasa from my Windows computers I found it in many ways not the right tool for me. Picasa has some great advantages which I don't want to miss. However, the support of the new resolution I find critical for future use as it really makes a big difference.
I've also got a Macbook Pro Retina running windows 7 Ultimate, and unfortunately many of the applications I use don't behave like they should on a true 2880.1800 display! I just don't understand why they can't act just like they would on a 27' iMac or Dell display with the same resolution! My gripes so far concerning: Google Chrome (Canary on Mac works fine, but I don't like Mac OX) I may have found a solution, I'll get back to you shortly, this requires a restart. Unfortunately we MBP-r users still represent an insignificant portion of the market share. While I'm sure it's on the whiteboard at their office (near the bottom of a long list of features to be implemented), it's not practical to devote a lot of time and money on something that affects less than one-tenth of a percent of their users. From my understanding (from ports of Lightroom and Photoshop, etc), it takes a lot of man hours to implement all the necessary Hi-Res assets. I could be entirely wrong, but I'd expect support when PC manufactures begin to release HiDPI displays in the second quarter of 2013. Sergiu Destinatus 3/12/2012, 4:23 น. I somewhat disagree with your comment. If I were to correct it, I'd say it's just as a product (picasa) there's not that many people using it (picasa) in general, wither it be Mac or PC.
So they're desire to fix it is low since Mac users with retina display is even lower than that of standard users. I get what you're saying, but since it lacked details this is what came to my mind at first glance; Google still allowed their team to create retina support for Chrome. In fact the speed in which they allowed this update was incredible. I REALLY wish someone from Google would let us know what's going on and what their plan is with the software. The fact that photography software hasn't been updated to work with retina displays for over a year now is pretty ironic.
Unfortunately, it also most likely means that Google is preparing to stop support for the desktop software and focus solely on their web editing features on Google+. For the record, I believe this is a huge mistake but one that Google seems destined to make.
Either way, please give us some sort of update! Enriquein 30/1/2014, 3:54 น.
Hi, Are Google guys reading this forum messages? It is really strange to me, that they cannot develop an update to support retina displays for such a long time. Google, please solve this! I am new to Mac, I've been a Windows user for years, and I did not expect that popular software will be not compatible with even not so new Mac models for such a long time. First I did a mistake and imported all the photos to iPhoto - and then I noticed, that iPhoto is a software for stupid people, who do not even understand anything about the files. I really like Picasa and want to switch to it completely, but my eyes start to hurt after working half an hour with it.
Then I look at iPhoto on my brand new MacBook Pro and I like the image quality. Still cannot switch completely to Picasa because of this, because I find iPhoto better for photo preview.
I will be waiting for the update that solves this issue. I hope, that Google will still continue to develop Picasa. Maybe they do not want to update it so much, because they are thinking of decommisioning it?
People, any news/thought on this? Regards, Rokas Kaunas, Lithuania, Europe aonghas 24/3/2014, 5:00 น. At this point it's simply ridiculous that there has been no response from Google. No other way to describe it aside from saying it's shitty customer service. As end-users of this product, we have the right to know whether development will continue or whether development has been suspended. If Picasa, as a desktop application, has a future then I have every intention of continuing to use it to manage my photo library.
If not, I will start the painful process of migrating my library to other software. But being left in the dark, I'm forced to make an uneducated decision which isn't right. But apart from your off-line work, it is a wrong idea to think about 100 GB in the cloud. You should see the cloud as a secundary backup in iPad-quality (2048px long side) which is totally free on G+ and uploads in reasonable times. But you can't expect from Photos that it can sync with G+ like Picasa, however that is not needed at all: if you are ready with a folder in photos, it can be uploaded into G+ straightly and G+ will do the resizing for you, but with too much compressing to my taste.
So you better can export from Photos in 2048px size and then upload to G+ without the Google resizing (and enhancing). keeping the existing folder structure - Photos works the same way iPhoto does, so it doesn't use your own folders; it creates its own database/library. high performance of the photo management software with low usage of resources - I haven't heard much about this, so no real complaints from users so far re: resources. As for whatever counts as 'high performance' when it comes to photo MANAGEMENT, again, remember it organizes your photos the same way iPhotos did (tagging, creating folders WITHIN Photos, not within Finder etc.) so if you like that kind of management, it sounds like it's the same general style just overall an improvement over Photos. ability to operate it fully offline - yes if you don't connect iCloud. But be advised if you choose to sync to iCloud it's ALL your photos or none, not selective. sharing feature using the cloud (whereby I care little about whether to share via G+ or iCloud or flickr) - this is the one I'm curious about, as I haven't seen which cloud sharing services are supported, or in what way (e.g.
Ease of sharing individual photos vs ease of sharing albums), but yes I believe it is intended to make sharing easy. This is absolutely pathetic, and disgusting from Google. Even if they have decided to abandon the app, they can at least address the needs of current users and update this to support retina displays which have been out for YEARS. The fact that Google can't even take a few seconds to post an update or a response in this thread shows the high level of contempt they have for their users, and how little they care. I use a Macbook Pro 15' retina, and I prefer Picasa to anything else, but the pixelated photos are driving me insane.
I don't imagine it would take much effort for Google to update it, yet they choose not to. Mack Talcott 26/7/2015, 16:21 น. Thank you Rinus for the tips. Unfortunately, these tips are not useful for me because I use picasa to organize files, tag pictures and create albums from MULTIPLE hard drive sources. After many years of usage (since 2004) I have not come accross any software that has such a power. Canon photo professional for instance can handle multiple sources but the tagging system is ridiculous (tags 1 to 5, good luck on tagging beach, wave, sunset, yellow), apple software is generally useless because it likes to dump things either on a ginormous file or in a single folder, and so on.
Picasa For Mac Os X
Should have expected this. However, if Google didn't absolutely hate it's customers, it would have supplied one final update then made this app not look like utter garbage on retina screens. But they do hate their customers, so to be expected. So sad that so many people (including myself) held out hope for this. A cloud based service CANNOT replace a desktop one for photo organization, and Picasa is the one that by far I liked the most. For a photo application, its unforgivable that Google, with all its resources, did not see it fit to update the app in such a basic way these past several years.
